October 17-October 20

Welcome back to another four-day week.  Here is an update for students and their families.

Grade 8 Language Arts students have completed their Garden Metaphor assignments (essays and visuals/poems) and have been roleplaying and discussing responses to our audiobook Bud, Not Buddy.  We aim to finish this novel this week and complete a brief speaking and listening opportunity (preparing and delivering debates).

Grade 9 Language Arts students hosted their first Fishbowl Discussion on the first 5 chapters of Touching Spirit Bear.  It was an incredible success with more than 2/3 of the class taking a risk to share their thoughts.  Another opportunity for Chapters 6-12 is available for students tomorrow.  On Tuesday, students will consider the following 6 facts about crime and the adolescent brain - please visit the link for a listening opportunity in addition to print information.

Grade 9 Social Studies students are studying the Youth Criminal Justice Act.  This week we are focussing our efforts on Mock Trials.  Students will first examine page 79 of the textbook and then be organized into groups to prepare and present a mock trial.  As a current event, we also took time to inform ourselves about the municipal election and participated in CIVIX student vote on October 13.

Yearbook 9 Planning Sheet - this week Yearbook students are being tasked with capturing life in our option blocks.  Planning on Tuesday, photography on Thursday.

Leadership 9 students are busy planning Halloween activities and Remembrance Day assembly contributions.  We are also helping out with Healthy Hunger fun lunch Fridays - please visit the website and search for Woodman if you are interested in ordering a lunch for Fridays!
